Wakey wakey, rise and shine: the GTG team test out the concealers that promise to give you brighter eyes

The awards season will no doubt have taken its toll on the celebs, not to mention those of us who have burnt the candle at both ends to make sure we catch the red carpet and the after party pics. This week the glossy posse test out the best under-eye concealers for hiding the evidence of late nights and a lack beauty sleep.

Estee Lauder Ideal Light Brush-on Illuminator

Price £23

Feedback “What really stood out for me with this concealer was its silky smooth and super lightweight texture. It provided great coverage and it also had a subtle light-reflective quality which provided a touch of luminosity too.

The brush applicator was easy to use and good for getting into every nook and cranny - just twist, swipe and blend to quickly cover all manner of imperfections.”

YSL Touche Eclat Shade 1.5

Price £25

Buy online www.ysl.co.uk

Feedback "This works almost like a highlighter rather than a concealer, brightening up any dullness around the eyes. It has a creamy, silky texture so it's not too drying on the skin, and thanks to the lightweight formula it blends in seamlessly - so I don't look like I've caked a whole stick of concealer over my face.

I loved the brush applicator as it made it far easier to dab it on evenly and smoothly without dragging, and it definitely brightened up the darker shadows under my eyes. Well worth the cult following and higher price tag."

Garnier BB Eye Cream Roll On

Price £9.99

Feedback “I really rated Garnier’s BB cream so was intrigued to see what the eye roll on version was like. The tube has a rollerball so that it’s really easy to apply; you simply roll under the eyes and feel a cooling sensation as the cream glides onto the skin. It’s quite a thin, watery texture, so it feels good on the skin but takes some time to build up.

Being quite pale, I tried the Light shade but I’d say even this was a bit too dark for me; given that I wanted to conceal darker shadows and circles, it wasn’t doing the trick in perking up my complexion. Though the colour wasn’t right, it did moisturise the eye area well and I’m certain the cooling effect helped to reduce early morning puffiness. Great as an eye cream but I’d recommend a brightening concealer over the top.”

NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer

Price £21

Buy online www.narscosmetics.co.uk

Feedback “I love the consistency of this concealer - it feels super light on the skin and unlike other concealers that I've tried, this was very creamy which made it easy to apply without needing to rub the skin harshly. As I often struggle to find a good concealer for olive skin with golden as opposed to yellow undertones, I was really impressed with the actual colour of the concealer (it’s available in ten shades) as well as the fact that it gave complete coverage without feeling 'cakey' at all. Perfect.”

Bobbi Brown Tinted Eye Brightener

Price £19.50

Buy online www.bobbibrown.co.uk

Feedback “Like a shot of espresso for your eyes, this under-eye awakener erases all traces of naughtiness with just a swipe of a wand. Although quite bold and opaque when first applied, the silky brightener quickly blends into the skin and stays put all day. It dries quickly too, so there is no danger of panda eyes due to eyeshadow fallout. I also loved the transparent tube - it’s vital to know when you’re running low on this beauty staple! Not quite as illuminating as the classic Touche Eclat, but it’s a heavy duty disguise for tired eyes.”

Benefit Erase Paste

Price £19.50

Buy online www.benefitcosmetics.co.uk

Feedback “I usually prefer a liquid formula when it comes to under-eye concealers so that I’m less likely to drag the skin, so I wasn’t sure what to expect with this little pot. I was pleasantly surprised; though I couldn’t see the ‘spatula’ that the packaging suggested I use, I dabbed it on under my eyes with my fingertips and found it to be quite creamy in texture.

The key with this one is to gently build it up and tap it on rather than attempt to glide it across the skin - it takes a little more time but builds up a fair amount of coverage, though the overall effect was more brightening than concealing. I used it on a couple of blemishes too and it really does live up to its name if used carefully - a mini Photoshop in a pot.”

Chantecaille Total Concealer

Price £32

Buy online http://uk.spacenk.com

Feedback “This is one of my favourite concealers of all time. For the days I’m feeling old, drained and tired, it works a seamless kind of magic, whisking away dark circles (and any other facial abomination that has reared its head overnight). It has a soft, creamy texture and I feel it blends into skin, hiding under-eye baggage but remaining undetectable to others. On the days I’m doing the school run and there’s no time for proper make-up, I also dab this around the nose, on the chin and on blemishes and it instantly makes skin look flawless in ten seconds. I also feel it comes in great real skin colours (not too apricot thankfully - who has apricot skin?) but it could do with being available for darker skin tones too (my only complaint)."
