The sun's out, your social diary is packed... but your foundation is sliding off your face minutes after leaving the house. Happily, top MUA Hannah Martin is here to help, with her long wear makeup masterclass
It's the season of weddings, festivals, summer soirées and extended rosé sessions in the pub garden. All great fun, obvs, but these all-dayers (and all-nighters) can prove a challenge for your makeup. We are talking foundation sliding off after an hour in the sun, evaporating lipsticks and eye makeup sliding around all over the place. Definitely not the look we were aiming for.
But if there's a woman who knows how to make your face last all day, it's Hannah Martin. The MUA extraordinaire counts Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice among her royal and celebrity clients and did the wedding makeup of the former. The 40-year-old has 15 years' experience, kicked off her career at Bobbi Brown, and has clocked up over four million views of her friendly, informative YouTube videos, showing how to do her trademark glowy skin and smokey eyes.
Hannah has created this exclusive one-minute Instagram tutorial for Get The Gloss covering how to get your makeup to last, a must-watch if you've got an imminent summer event.

She's also just published her first book Make Up (HQ, HarperCollins, £22), a guide to a variety of makeup looks, with loads of tips and product recommendations. Kudos for using imagery of different types of women, showcasing a variety of ages and skin tones - there's truly something here for every woman (and man - there's a male grooming section).
Longwear makeup is one of the topics covered - here's an exclusive extract from the book, to accompany the Insta reel. Over to you, Hannah.
"Long-wear makeup is totally different to beauty shoot makeup. Shoot makeup doesn’t need to last, it just needs to look good in the moment for the photographer to get the shot. Sadly we’re not always it by professionals or have makeup artists on hand for touch-ups every few minutes, so some of the gorgeous looks we see in glossy magazines or online don’t translate brilliantly when it comes to longevity. But, thankfully, there are lots of products out there that can withstand a trip to the gym, a swim in the sea, high humidity, or an 18-hour day!
"You don’t have to use all these products mentioned, as long-wear makeup doesn’t have to be full makeup. A few simple formula tweaks and you really can create plenty of looks that don’t smudge at all.
Moisturiser and SPF
"If longer wear is important to you then you need to start taking this into consideration at the very first step of your routine – your skincare. Look for products that don’t contain oil and stick to water-based serums and moisturisers like Vichy Mineral 89 Hyaluronic Acid Serum £26 and follow with something like Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Oil-Free Gel Cream, £32. The same goes when choosing your SPF and foundation. There are many to choose from, but I do love Eucerin Oil Control Sun Gel-Cream SPF 50 for oily skin, £18"
Foundations that last
"There are plenty of foundation options available but the Bareminerals Complexion Rescue foundation stick is water-based, gorgeous and in no way heavy. For fuller coverage, pick oil-free formulas like Charlotte Tilbury’s Airbrush Flawless Foundation and Bobbi Brown Skin Long-Wear Weightless. Estée Lauder’s Double Wear Foundation is a full coverage foundation but you can apply just a little for a more sheer application, and it has such a loyal fanbase because it really doesn’t move."
Setting powders
"Setting with powder is essential for long-wearing makeup but again, look for one that is oil-free, as not all are. A few favourites are Clinique Stay Matte oil-free powder and Charlotte Tilbury’s Airbrush Flawless Finish Powder. It is best to use powder-based blush as it lasts better than creams."
For brows that last choose a pomade
"For brows there are lots of long-wear brow pencils and pomades available – you really don’t need to look further than Anastasia Beverly Hills for everything you could need. I do recommend you avoid powder on the brows, which can move as you sweat, whereas a waterproof pomade won’t budge."
Long-wear eye makeup
"When it comes to eye makeup I’d always recommend long-wear cream shadows. Long gone are the days of tubes of cream containing pigment that didn’t even last five minutes on the skin without creasing. Now there are multiple liquid formulas like Huda Beauty’s Matte and Metal Melted Shadows – I wore their Diamond Drip shadow when I ran the London Marathon and it DID NOT MOVE! You can also find excellent waterproof eyeliners, such as Urban Decay 24/7 which is a glide-on pencil that is smooth on application and doesn’t smudge (they are therefore my go-to for brides)."
Waterproof or tubing mascara
"These are best for long-wear. Unfortunately, not all waterproof mascaras are created equal so be sure to look up reviews before you make your purchase. Some of the best include Bobbi Brown No Smudge, Clinique High Impact Waterproof and Huda Legit Lashes Waterproof Topcoat.
"You will need to also purchase a waterproof makeup remover like Lancôme Bi-Facil as most cleansers will struggle to lift the makeup off! If the removal process puts you off, then a tubing mascara is a great alternative. The polymers wrap themselves around the lashes and create little ‘tubes’ of coating that only come off when teased with warm water. It makes removal really easy and doesn’t break or pull your lashes, there are great options by Trish McEvoy, Hourglass Unlocked and Victoria Beckham.
Go for a liquid lipstick
"Liquid lipsticks tend to be the most long-wearing. Until recently the only real option for waterproof lipstick was Max Factor Lipfinity, which is still one of the very best smudge-resistant lipsticks on the market, but admittedly it does dry over time, which is why it comes with a gloss to revive it. Recently, others have appeared on the market such as Kylie Jenner’s Lip Kits. Long-wearing matte lipsticks are popular, but remember, they are a bit drying so take your lip prep seriousl"y.
Fix it in place with a setting spray
"All that’s left now is a little setting spray, which you need to be careful when selecting. Many are simply hydrating mists, which can have an adverse effect for those wanting to hold their makeup in place longer. However, Kryolan Fixing Spray and Urban Decay All Nighter are very effective at holding makeup in place."
