Experts are in agreement that we should all be wearing SPF every day. And while many foundations contain SPF, remember you'd need to top up with a teaspoonful on the face and neck every two hours to keep up the level of protection it says on the bottle. That's a whole lot of pigment! This is where tinted moisturiser with SPF comes into its own; it's sun protection first and foremost, but one you can top up throughout the day with that extra bit of colour or coverage

These magical bases come in different formulas (liquid and cream) as well as finishes (dewy, matte, satin) and feature super sheer, medium, and full-coverage options. Some simply blur to unify your complexion rather than add a foundation-like shade.

In the past, tinted SPFs have been fairly limited when it comes to the shades they offer. And whilst there is still a lot more work to do, thanks to modern formulations a lot more 'one shade suits all' products really do work for every skin tone. Whilst other brands are approaching their tinted SPFs like a foundation range (we're looking at you wonderful people at Ilia and Ultra Violette). So if that has put you off in the past it is definitely time to rethink and give tinted SPFs another chance.

Whether you're looking for a subtle blurring of imperfections or a high-coverage tint, we've got all bases covered with our tried and tested round-up of the best tinted SPFs.

Best classic buy: Bareminerals Complexion Rescue Tinted Hydrating Gel Cream SPF 30, £33

Arguably the OG tinted moisturiser with SPF. This delivers fairly sheer coverage but it is buildable however you will need a concealer on stand for any areas that need a bit more pigment oomph. It blends like a dream, feels really light and hydrating - thanks to the inclusion of hyaluronic acid - 0on the skin and has a decent SPF 30 to boot.

It only comes in four shades but they really do stretch across a lot of skin tones.

Not only does it smell of holidays but it has a lovely gorgeous creamy consistency and feels really hydrating. If you’re having a good skin day then this really is all you need on your skin in terms of makeup, but otherwise, you could team with a bit of concealer too.

Best sunkissed look for all skin tones: Institut Esthederm Bronz Repair Sunkissed, was £66 now £26.40

Unlike any other brand, Institut Esthederm doesn’t follow the standard SPF categories as it doesn’t believe that the numbers go far enough to protect against all the damage the sun can do, so using their products does require a bit of research and re-education. What you will notice are the words ‘moderate sun’ on the packaging which means this is designed for days where the skin is exposed to…you guessed it, moderate sun. It comes in one universal shade that really does work on all skin tones and it leaves a gorgeous bronzed effect to the skin whilst delivering skin caring ingredients and sun protection. And just like other SPFs they recommend reapplying every two hours.

Best mineral facial SPF: Esse Sunscreen SPF30, £37.50

Mineral sunscreens have had a bit of a bad rap in the past. This is because they physically block the sun’s rays from your skin and the ingredients that were used to do this were quite heavy and chalky. However those days are long gone and this product from probiotic skincare specialist Esse stands as a testament to that. It sinks in immediately and even though it comes in one shade it doesn’t leave any white residue so does work for everyone.
