A Saturday morning blow dry with Sinead Kelly is like going round to your best friends for a gossip and a cup of tea. As soon as you arrive, she makes you feel completely at ease – which is essential when visiting a hairdresser, especially for the first time. Maybe it’s her Irish charm that truly makes you feel comfortable, or the massage chairs waiting for you when you are taken to have your hair washed by one of her ultra glamorous assistants. The setting is decadent and feminine, making you feel like you are in your own personal dressing room, and chairs aren’t too squashed together.
With a head full of thick hair herself, she knows what women with ‘too much’ hair want and need. She also ensures that her staff aren’t one-trick-ponies; she trains every member of her team to both cut and colour. She knows that her clients want to build a relationship with their stylist, and the multi-talented team and relaxed ambiance of the salon makes bonding a breeze.
So passionate was she for hairdressing that she left her native Ireland to come to London and train at Vidal Sassoon by herself. She then headed back to Dublin to work with L’Óreal, building up her skills and clientele, before founding her own namesake salon, Sinead Kelly, in South West London.
She feels strongly about getting more female names out there in the world of hairdressing, and judging by her ability to make clients feel more confident about themselves before and after their appointment with her, it will only be a matter of time before she really does. And proof was also in the pudding as when we left, an older grey-haired gentleman was booking in all of his appointments up until Christmas.
