Salon Spy: Gielly Green

You know those times when you arrive at a salon and the atmosphere is more train station than tranquil grooming haven? It’s cramped, the phone’s ringing off the hook, a stylist is screaming, somebody’s caught alight underneath a hooded dryer (this has never actually happened to my knowledge but it’s a primal beauty fear of mine)…it’s Dante’s version of hairdressing. Now let me assure you, none of the above will EVER happen here. If your salon visits leave you more stressed than serene, you need to sojourn to Gielly Green, stat. It’ll be the best salon switch you’ve ever made, and here’s why.
Hairdressers Fred Gielly and Shai Greenberg have created a central London sanctum of beauty staffed by calm, capable and, all-in-all, pretty exceptional staff. Together Fred and Shai handpick their talented team, and it’s fair to say that they’ve assembled an entourage of experts in almost every field of beauty. From cuts to colours to waxing to massage, the co-founders have hit the beauty bullseye by offering clients superior services all under one roof. Many of the treatments, and certainly Fred and Shai’s own haircare and body range, have holistic leanings, which are telling of the salon’s ethos and environment. Everyone cares about you here; from the moment that you walk through the door nothing is too much trouble. It’s TLC on tap.
The salon itself is warm, polished and spacious. Dark woods, cream walls, leather furnishings and ambient lighting break the ice when you enter; it’s nigh on impossible to feel anxious or tense here. Any niggling worries that do slip through the net will dissolve by the time you reach the sinks; the plush chairs at the shampoo station recline to become beds. You’re travelling in First Class now dear readers.
Once I’d been washed and massaged, I had a good chat with my stylist Matt. By the end of the appointment it was apparent that he was both an accomplished listener and coiffeur. I don’t undervalue the former - only too often have I emerged from the hairdressers with a wispy fringe when actually I prefer a blunt cut, or had a bit more lopped off than I’m comfortable with. Matt on the other hand was all ears, advising but never imposing and getting the job done in double quick time. My overgrown fringe was trimmed back into submission while my ragged lengths were snipped of split ends and left blunt, healthy and bang on. One shiny, swishy blow dry later and I was on my way- all in under an hour but at no point rushed or pressured. I left feeling like a nicer person - the friendly, funny and accommodating team brighten even the drizzliest of Monday afternoons and won’t fail to reset your mood. Call it a salon, call it a spa, call it rehab; Gielly Green makes you feel (and look) better. Paradise may come at a price, but I can assure you that your money won’t go to waste.
