The Look
“With any iconic hair look, the silhouette is very important – that’s not just the outline of the hair but the way it frames the face. You could almost take a cardboard cutout of this hairstyle and instinctively know that it’s Farrah Fawcett,” says Sam. “The important elements to updating the Farrah look are: 1) It’s not about flicks all around the hair as Farrah wore it in the Seventies, but more just about the front and the fringe 2) I have blow dried the hair in this video, but this is not a necessity, in fact it looks really modern to have more texture, and 3) The hair shouldn’t be as stiff as it was in the Seventies or lacquered to within an inch of its life.”
The new Farrah in six simple steps
1. Start with clean, damp hair and apply a volumising mousse evenly throughout to add oomph to lifeless locks. Try Sebastian Mousse Forte, £15.75, www.feelunique.com “Don’t be sparing,” says Sam.
2. Next, rough dry hair until it’s about 70 per cent dry before blow drying using a round bristle brush and a professional strength hairdryer. “Make sure you pull hair upwards as you blow dry,” says Sam, “This gives hair more volume than brushing it downwards which flattens hair.” The Parlux 3200 Compact, £59.95, www.parlux.co.uk is a hairdressers’ favourite as is the Kent Pure Round Bristle Natural Shine Brush, £9.50, www.kentbrushes.com
3. Once dry, allow hair to fall in its natural parting, and taking some large curling tongs, curl one-inch size sections of hair all over the head. “Make sure you curl the hair away from the face on each side, not towards it,” says Sam, who uses the Large Babyliss Ceramic Dial-A-Heat Curling Tong, £38.99, www.babylisspro.co.uk . Use section clips to clip pieces of hair out of the way if you need to. Hair Tools Sectioning Clips, £2.29 for six, www.sallyexpress.com
4. Leave for ten minutes to set before combing through with a wide-toothed comb to soften and separate the waves. If necessary brush through using a bristle brush to create an even softer look. Mason Pearson hairbrush, £93, www.masonpearson.com and Denman Professional Carbon Wide Tooth Comb, £7.25, www.sallyexpress.com
5. Throw you head upside down and hairspray the roots before backcombing with your bristle brush to give added volume. Try Pantene Pro-V Volume & Body Strength 5, £2.99, www.boots.com
6. Flip hair back up and smooth over the top gently with your brush.
