Super-relaxation is possible inside Selfridges, found our tester as she was given a full-body massage in the department store spa
Providing the perfect antidote to the chaos of Oxford Street lies the discreetly located Clarins Skin Spa in Selfridges. Positioned behind the counter on the beauty floor, you'd be forgiven if you walked straight past it. In fact, I actually nearly did.
Having just waded through what felt like the entire population of London on the shop floor to find it, I was dubious about whether I would actually be able to relax (let alone feel comfortable getting naked) in such close proximity to the shopping masses outside. The last thing that I wanted was for a misdirected tourist to come in asking where to find the handbags. However, the room was surprisingly sound-proof and once in there, you could almost forget about the fact that you were in one of the busiest department stores in the UK.
The ladies at their front-of-house were polite and courteous and the waiting room was surprisingly quiet and peaceful. I was warmly greeted by my beauty therapist Rosie and after filling in a quick medical questionnaire, she led me into the treatment room. Pleasantly lit and tastefully decorated, the room felt like an other-worldly portable relaxation cocoon, designed to give frazzled shoppers some respite from the mad clamour for beauty bargains going on outside. I was booked in for the Rebalancing Massage with Relax Essential Oils, (from £55 for a 1 hour and 20 minutes treatment) - a full-body massage designed to loosen knots and relieve muscular tension. The pre-treatment consultation was extremely thorough, as Rosie identified my specific body problems and the causes for them and then adapted the treatment to address them. She was approachable, professional, knowledgeable and was unphased even when I asked whether I had put my paper undies the right way round (I was apparently not the first to enquire!)
For me, the highlight of this treatment was the assortment of heavenly smelling hot treatment oils that were gently massaged into my body. The mixture of scents was enough to transport me to such a state of relaxation and calm, that I could have quite easily spent the night there. The massage was deep and comprehensive, with particular emphasis spent on the areas that were particularly stiff (namely my neck, shoulders and legs), ensuring that all kinks were well and truly ironed out.
As well as massages, the spa also offers a huge selection of other treatments ranging from facials and body treatments for both men and women, as well as pampering ones for mothers-to-be and new mothers too. Suddenly, a trip down Oxford Street sounds so much less stressful.
