Britain's top colourist has a shiny new home in Mayfair, and we can see why regulars like the Duchess of Cornwall keep coming back
Jo Hansford is the doyenne of hair colour in Britain, and has recently moved her team to a very smart new salon just across from the American Embassy in Grosvenor Square. It's the first time we've been given a menu of everything from coffee to sandwiches (NB you do have to pay but it's not eyewatering).
They specialise in fixing colour disasters - while GTG was congratulated on having "today's worst roots", another client came in with orange ends (home dye horror) and left looking totally normal.
After a quick consultation with Taylor, who has been with Jo for years, we tried "fusion colour" to fix our bad roots. This a clever, brickwork-like technique where stripes of blonde are made visible but erratic, so not really recognisable as highlights. We are addicted, though at £155 and up per half head (£205+ for a full head) it's an expensive habit.
A cut and blowdry was speedy yet effective - always welcome after hours spent in the chair running your iPhone battery down while your colour takes.
The new Mayfair salon is beautiful but still homely enough to feel familiar and welcoming to regulars (who include the Duchess of Cornwall, Karen Gillan and Nigella Lawson as well as virtually every Arab woman in the area - there is a private room for clients who either don't want to be seen, or don't want their hair to be seen). If you're in a colour crisis, think of it as a rather glamorous A&E.
