Halo lights plus some seriously high tech gizmos equals the next level in hair colour at Percy & Reed East

If you’re looking for a salon experience that seamlessly fuses some serious cut and colour know-how with a laid-back, effortlessly cool vibe befitting of an East London postcode, look no further than this latest addition to the Percy & Reed empire. With bags of character, the décor is retro yet slick with many of the trademark characteristics remaining from its time spent as a base for tomato and banana merchants (like the air-holes still in the walls which used to circulate cool air to keep the merchandise fresh).

The individual touches that were dotted around the salon removed all traces of pretentiousness, such as the selection of Adam Reed’s personal book collection on the shelves, the entertaining quotes on various parts of the furnishings and the bathroom of all things, which displayed a rather eclectic selection of framed, vintage kooky pictures that are certainly worth a look at.

But what was really unique about this salon was the colour consultation area. To ensure that customers leave with a truly bespoke colour that suits all lights and all aspects of their lifestyle, the colour consultation has been updated for the modern millennia with iPads, colour boards and most impressively, halo lights thrown into the mix. These almost ethereal beings of state-of-the-art gadgetry, change to reflect the lighting in any season and any room and adapt to reflect the best tones that would suit your colouring, dependent on what your in-depth iPad consultation determines. Genius.

My stylist and Colour Director of the salon, Andrew John was extremely knowledgeable and thoroughly examined my hair to advise on what suited my features, hair type, face shape and skin tone. We also discussed the merits of warm vs cool tones and how a selection of shades would impact on my features. The consultation was in-depth and very informative, and although on this occasion Andrew recommended that I not go for a colour to cover the handful of greys that I had (bonus points for zero pressure), he gave me all the advice I would need to ensure that I’m fully clued up for when I finally decide to go for it myself.

The blow dry that I opted for instead was all sophistication - a long, flowing, glossy turnaround from the rather ragged collection of weather-weary locks that I presented him with initially. The team were friendly, polite and professional and the atmosphere had a homely feel, ensuring that I felt relaxed and comfortable in my surroundings as Andrew worked his magic.

For those interested in seeing a new perspective on hair styling and colour, this salon is definitely for you. I loved my wonderfully silky blow-dry and left my appointment all the more informed about different hairstyles and hair colour options. Although I’m not quite ready to dye my slowly greying locks just yet, when that day comes I’ll know exactly where I’ll be booking into.
