Kirstin Sinclair discovers a little slice of heaven on the Cornish coast
On a recent trip to Cornwall I found a sanctuary for a long weekend of mind and body rejuvenation: The Scarlet Hotel. A luxury eco hotel and ayurvedic spa, it overlooks the rugged coastline of the Atlantic Ocean on the North Cornish Coast and couldn’t be more serene inside or out.
Using ayurvedic traditions, the hotel spa’s treatments originate from a Hindu system of medicine native to India. The spa prides itself on being much more about holistic healing than beauty therapy; in their own words, they offer a “Spa experience that goes deeper than conventional treatments, helping you to listen to your body’s needs and find ways of coping better with life’s stresses”.
The spa is renowned for its bespoke treatment plans - or journeys, as they prefer to call them - using a combination of organic and natural products from Voya (a wonderful product range that uses hand harvested Irish Seaweed), Neom, Green People, Tridosha, and Mama Mio.
These journeys can last anything from four hours to three days. Following a medical questionnaire and a 30-minute consultation with a trained therapist, you will plan a bespoke journey for yourself or for you and a partner. The journey will be specifically designed to target your personal needs with the aim of helping you to find ways of regaining life balance.
The seaside destination caters for people with a vast range of medical conditions and has a no children policy, making it the perfect place for couples, individuals and even small groups looking for complete calm and relaxation. From the eucalyptus and menthol steam room to the freshwater and seaweed-infused log-fired hot tubs on the cliffs overlooking the breathtaking views of the Cornish Sea, as well as chlorine-free swimming pools and a beautifully modern design, it has all the attention to detail you need to feel like you’re in another world.
Three day escapes can include yoga, dance, singing lessons, surfing, guided meditation and a choice of spa treatments. Couples can have massage lessons together and the hotel even has a dog you can borrow to take with you on a walk if you fancy exploring the beautiful coastline with man’s best friend - another thoughtful touch.
