Rich in essential fatty acids, hemp seed oil can help provide a hefty dose of hydration to parched winter skin. From a bestselling hand cream to a new facial oil, here are our top product picks

When it comes to tackling dry, parched and inflamed skin, hemp is creating quite the buzz at the moment with brands going a little wacky for putting a bit of baccy into their products.

Although gaining momentum, its use isn’t new with The Body Shop having championed it since 1992. Noted for being both skin and environmentally-friendly (it's four times more effective at capturing CO2 than trees and is able to thrive without the need for chemicals), the brand's even created a range centred around the ingredient.

In terms of its various incarnations, there are two types: hemp oil, which is made from the seeds of the cannabis plant and cannabidiol (CBD), made from the plant’s flowers and leaves. The prevalence of hemp seed oil on our labels in particular hasn’t escaped our notice, with it cropping up again and again on products formulated for dry and stressed skin types. Non-psychoactive and rich in omegas 3, 6 and 9, those suffering from the dehydrating after-effects of central heating, party season and general winter wear and tear could benefit most from incorporating it into their regime.

If you’re tempted to begin your 2018 skincare routine on a high, here are our five favourite products that highlight hemp seed oil as one of their hero ingredients.

The Body Shop Hemp Hand Protector, £5

One of these is reportedly sold every 9 seconds around the world and having tried it ourselves, it’s easy to see why. Rich without leaving a greasy residue, it’s enriched with cold-pressed hemp seed oil, glycerin and castor seed oil to provide immediate relief and long-lasting hydration too.
