Hemp seed oil: 5 products that’ll help you start 2018 on a skin high

Rich in essential fatty acids, hemp seed oil can help provide a hefty dose of hydration to parched winter skin. From a bestselling hand cream to a new facial oil, here are our top product picks
When it comes to tackling dry, parched and inflamed skin, hemp is creating quite the buzz at the moment with brands going a little wacky for putting a bit of baccy into their products.
Although gaining momentum, its use isn’t new with The Body Shop having championed it since 1992. Noted for being both skin and environmentally-friendly (it's four times more effective at capturing CO2 than trees and is able to thrive without the need for chemicals), the brand's even created a range centred around the ingredient.
In terms of its various incarnations, there are two types: hemp oil, which is made from the seeds of the cannabis plant and cannabidiol (CBD), made from the plant’s flowers and leaves. The prevalence of hemp seed oil on our labels in particular hasn’t escaped our notice, with it cropping up again and again on products formulated for dry and stressed skin types. Non-psychoactive and rich in omegas 3, 6 and 9, those suffering from the dehydrating after-effects of central heating, party season and general winter wear and tear could benefit most from incorporating it into their regime.
If you’re tempted to begin your 2018 skincare routine on a high, here are our five favourite products that highlight hemp seed oil as one of their hero ingredients.
The Body Shop Hemp Hand Protector, £5
One of these is reportedly sold every 9 seconds around the world and having tried it ourselves, it’s easy to see why. Rich without leaving a greasy residue, it’s enriched with cold-pressed hemp seed oil, glycerin and castor seed oil to provide immediate relief and long-lasting hydration too.
Dr Organic Hemp Oil Intensive Eye Serum, £9.99
This hydrating daily eye serum contains a conditioning cocktail of ingredients designed to tackle the signs of tiredness. With hemp seed oil, safflower seed oil, aloe vera juice and candlenut oil, its lightweight texture slips silkily onto delicate eye areas and absorbs quickly too.
Eve Lom Radiance Face Oil, £60
If you love a facial oil (*raises hand*), this rich but fast absorbing pick acts as the perfect seasonal swap for winter wary skin. Containing hemp seed oil together with conditioning abyssinian oil, avocado oil, vitamin C and other complexion boosters, it protects and hydrates in one fell swoop.
Dr Bronner 18-in-1 Hemp Rose Pure-Castile Soap, £15.94
Offering a wide range of uses, this vegan liquid soap is one of those staples that every bathroom shelf and kitchen sink could benefit from having. With a refreshingly minimal ingredients list that teams hemp oil with coconut oil, olive oil and jojoba oil (among others), it acts as a body and clothes wash, conditioning hair rinse and all-purpose cleaner to make it a multitasker of the very highest order.
Votary Super Seed Facial Oil, £70
With an impressive 21 plant oils in its make up, stressed and very dry skin types in particular will reap the greatest rewards from this nourishing oil. A favourite of GTG’s Art Editor, Sarah McGinnis, it’s a heavyweight where hydration’s concerned, but it also works brilliantly under makeup as a moisturising base. Conditioning but calming, it aids both recovery and rehydration in equal measure.
