The best tummy-flattering swimwear for every shape and budget
June 20th 2018 / 0 comment
From sculpting fabrics to smart seams and panels, there’s plenty of choice when it comes to finding a flattering cossie. Here’s our pick of the best
The idea of having a perfect, slender body that is ‘bikini-ready’ has thankfully been largely dismissed (got a body? You're ready), but that’s not to say that finding flattering swimwear is any less of a yearly mission - we can happily accept our lumps, bumps and curves as part of our natural beauty and still want to look good as we head to the pool.
But whether it’s a bikini for your summer break or a rash vest for your newfound love of surfing that you’re after, there’s one part of the swimsuit shopping task that’s hard to nail: the tummy. Some one-pieces stretch over bigger bellies only to make them appear worse (especially if you suffer with bloating) and an ill-fitting high-waisted bikini bottom can draw more attraction to wobbly bits, not less; but find the right cut with built-in, flattering fabrics and shaping and you’ll feel more confident than ever. Dive in to our edit of the best tummy-taming swimwear below…
FatFace Breton Racer Swimsuit, £38
Navy and nautical never goes out of style, but more importantly this racer style costume is made of Lycra Xtra Life™ which is designed to last longer than other fabrics, holding up to chlorine, heat and sunscreen and whatever else you throw at it. The side panelling gives a more flattering silhouette while the zip fastening at the back makes it far easier to squeeze into, and inside there’s a mesh lining on the tummy area for extra support.
M&S Secret Slimming Non Wired Tankini Top, £22.50
Don’t be tempted to stick to dark colours if you’re wary of your tummy - it’s all about the cut, so plenty of fun can still be had. M&S has, in my opinion, one of the best ranges for women who want to hide and support any wobbly bits, with a great size range and at decent prices too. I wear their tankinis such as this red number regularly for swimming at my local pool and the ruched fabric makes you look and feel taut and toned - it’s their ‘Secret Slimming’ technology, and the non-wired moulded cups help to enhance your figure too. I also find a tankini a better option for my height - at 5’10 many one-pieces fail to stretch enough in the body so this way I’m comfortable yet covered.
Natatio Support One Piece, £75
This sculpting swimsuit has it all - from the front it looks stylish yet practical for the committed swimmer, from the back the bright racer style and flattering fit makes it ideal for hanging out by the pool (without anything actually hanging out). With a power mesh panel and ruching over the stomach for a smoother fit and an eco-friendly fabric (80% is made from regenerated nylon yarn), it contours with comfort. Note that on the site they’re advising you order a size down, so despite the smaller range, if you’re an 18 you may still find it fits.
Speedo Aquajewel, £58
Sizes: 10-24 (Speedo size 32-46, see their size guide on site)
The Speedo Sculpture range is created with body-shaping fabric, hidden bust support and tummy control. The full range is impressive - the result of the brand measuring over 5,000 women to assess what they need in a swimsuit - but the Aquajewel’s v-neckline and under-bust band add to the slimming effect.
Boux Avenue Saba Bikini Top and High Waisted Briefs, from £18
Sizes: Top - from C to D cup. Bottoms - 6-16
While this option doesn’t have any tummy-shaping technology as such, if you are looking for a flattering bikini for a rounder tummy then your best bet is to head to a brand such as Boux Avenue who know their lingerie - and therefore know exactly how to find you the right fit. As with the rest of the range, this pretty floral high-waisted number with an underwired balcony style top is sold as separates so you can buy the bikini top in your bra size and then match with your choice of bottoms, because women’s bodies do not just come in small, medium and large.
ROXY Fitness Long Sleeve One-Piece Swimsuit, £60
If you’re covering up in a rash vest, make it this tummy-toning one with a fitted design and waist detail. With smooth lines, a zip fastening and chlorine-resistant fabric, the UPF50 one piece has everything you need to hit the waves and show off your curves.
Lazul Babylon Graziella One Piece, £195
Size: 6-14 (Lazuli size 0-4, see size guide)
There’s no doubt this costume is chic (not to mention a bit of an investment piece), but there’s more than meets the eye - a clever combination of a padded top, a halter neckline and a flattering wrap body with a high leg makes this one-piece a suits-all solution for creating a smoother, slimmer-looking silhouette. The size range is sadly lacking, but the strong band under the bust and stretchy fabric means it works for different shapes if not sizes.
