Party hair pro: Goldwell’s Casey Coleman is your man
What is the hottest hair trend for the party season this year?
“It’s all about texture, as seen in this glam updo inspired by 1990s Pamela Anderson, where the hair is loosely put up. It looks effortless and I promise it’s not difficult to do yourself. It’s just about knowing the step-by-step process to ensure it looks absolutely gorgeous.”

Sounds good! How do we create the look at home?
- Start with yesterday’s hair (no need to shampoo).
- Blow dry the hair using Goldwell Stylesign Volume Bodifying Brilliance Mousse, £17.50, and a round brush.
- Apply plenty of Goldwell Stylesign Dry Texture Spray, £18.50, to provide grip.
- Spray Goldwell Stylesign Smooth Shine Spray, £17.50, all over the hair.
- Use a curling tong or flat iron to create loose waves through the hair.
- Clip the top section of hair up, pull the rest of the hair back and up into a French twist.
- Pin in place with bobby pins.
- Leave two sections of the hair at the front.
- Scrunch the remaining hair from the top section into a ball and pin over the French twist.
- Spray more Goldwell Stylesign Dry Texture Spray, £18.50.
- Using the curling iron, re-curl the front sections of hair away from the face so they fall perfectly.
- Finish with Goldwell Stylesign Strong Hair Spray, £17.50, for extra hold and gloss.
What is the biggest no-no when it comes to party hair?
“Anything too difficult or fiddly! It’s like having only five minutes to cook a Sunday roast. I’m sure Jamie Oliver could do it but I couldn’t! Keep it simple like the updo above or watch our Amazon Live at 6pm on Tuesday 28 October, where I’ll be demonstrating how to go from a basic daytime ponytail to a full head of waves in just 10 minutes.”
Your tip for getting the best party hair in a hurry?
“Dry Shampoo is a must. I love the Goldwell Dualsenses Ultra Volume Bodifying Dry Shampoo, £17.50. Not only does it cleanse, but it provides volume too. Dry texture sprays are also a great way of taking flat and limp hair to textured beach babe waves in seconds. Try the Goldwell Stylesign Texture Dry Texture Spray, £18.50. It gives hair more grip, helps mould hair into any shape, it lasts all night and even into the next morning if you need it to!”

Is there a party hairstyle that suits everybody?
“A half-wet, half-dry look is also great for all hair lengths and it’s easy to do. Blow-dry all the hair nice and smooth, then brush it all back from the face using Goldwell Stylesign Texture Lagoom Jam Styling Gel, £17.50, making sure the product is covering the hairline, and a few inches back to create a wet look, but stopping at the ears so the rest of hair remains dry and smooth. Fix the gel into place with Goldwell Stylesign Strong Hairspray.”
What is the one styling product everyone should stock up on before party season starts?
“Everyone needs a really good hairspray, like the Goldwell Stylesign Extra Strong Hairspray, £17.50. It’s a must to support your look from dinner to dancefloor. And if I could have another one it would be the Goldwell Stylesign Smooth Shine Spray, £17.50, it’s great for humidity protection and keeping frizz at bay when things get hot!”

Should we be washing our hair on the day of the party?
“Lived-in hair is much easier to style than clean, soft hair so shampoo and condition the day before and blow-dry with a really good mousse like the Goldwell Stylesign Volume Bodifying Brilliance Mousse, £17.50. Then leave your hair in a loose ponytail or bun (not so tight that it marks the hair), and that will give you a great base for styling the next day.”
What party looks would you recommend for different hair types?
- If you have curls and coils, embrace the natural curls with lots of volume, ensuring they are defined and shiny with Goldwell Stylesign Curls Bundling Gel, £17.50. Then, randomly pin sparkly baronettes all over for extra glamour.”
- If you have short hair, it’s easier to focus on the top layers, which are generally the longest lengths. You can add some braids in the top or side and then finish with Goldwell Stylesign Smooth Shine Spray, £17.50, for extra gloss and humidity protection.
- If you have long hair, go for a wave. Make sure you prep with Goldwell Stylesign Shaping & Finishing Spray, £18.50 and take horizontal sections as you wind the hair around a curling iron. This will create width and volume rather than vertical sections, which makes the curls entwine together and look a bit old-fashioned.
