From fruity florals made for hot summer days to perfumes that are an ode to sunshine, here are some of the best scents you’re going to want to wear this spring
The start of a new season needs a scent to go with it, so we’ve trawled through the latest spring perfumes to find the best out there. Of course, it may seem obvious to head straight to the floral section - as the famous quote from The Devil Wears Prada goes: ‘Flowers? For spring? Groundbreaking.’ But, it makes lots of sense for your personal scent to mimic what’s happening around you whether that’s mirroring the weather, the seasonality of the plants and flowers in season or simply how you’re feeling. However, that doesn’t mean there isn’t a place for spring perfumes that are heavier and muskier, they shouldn’t be confined to the best perfumes for autumn alone. And we’re seeing a huge shift towards new spring perfumes having a moment of heavier impact, which truly makes them groundbreaking.Whatever your rationale for a new perfume this spring, here is our selection of the new ones hitting the shelves that may just pique your interest.
1. Best luxury spring perfume: Penhaligon’s Solaris EDP, £160 for 100ml
Created to be an ode to the sun you can’t help but picture basking in the warmth as soon as you smell this golden-hued perfume. There are notes of bergamot and orange, but it’s not overly zesty. There’s something very clean about it but also something about it that sparkles. It’s perfectly unisex and also perfect for every occasion. It would work at the formality of a summer wedding but also casually by the sea.
2. Best budget spring perfume: The Body Shop Full Iris EDP, £39
The thought of iris can conjure up the powdery types of scent your Grandma might have worn so you need to put all thoughts of that out of your mind as this is a very modern and fresh take on iris. There’s a real sense of ‘green’ to this and a freshness of juniper berry that cuts through the iris to give it a more contemporary feel and it’s that note that gives real depth and lasts all day long.
3. Best spring perfume for all occasions: Boss Hugo Boss The Scent Magnetic For Her EDP, £45.60 for 30ml
If you like your spring scent a little bit of floral, a little bit of amber and a little bit of musk, but not too much of either one then you may just love this as it combines all three at just the right levels so nothing is too over-powering but you still get a sense of all of them. As with all Huge Boss scents, this is ultra-wearable, transcends all age groups and works for any occasion. An absolute failsafe buy this summer.
4. Best spring perfume for teenagers: Marc Jacobs Perfect EDT, £75 for 50ml
Following on from the huge success of the EDP version comes this lighter and fresher EDT that’s ideal for warmer weather. There is a hint of spice with pink peppercorn but that dries away to leave a watery but slightly woody scent. There’s also a waft of cucumber, even though bizarrely there’s no cucumber in it! The whimsical charm-adorned bottle lid will appeal to teenagers looking for a fragrance that feels grown-up or for grown-ups who want to smile every time they look at the bottle.
5. Best unisex spring perfume: Van Cleef and Arpel Moonlight Rose EDP, £145 for 75ml
A lot of spring perfumes with a rose focus are light, uplifting and joyful. This is none of those things and it’s all the better for it. As the name suggests, this is the imagining of a rose at night. Still fresh but far more seductive and sophisticated thanks to spicy notes of pink pepper and heavy patchouli and oakmoss. It’s unisex and honestly one of the most special fragrances we’ve smelt in a long time.
6. Best jasmine spring perfume: Chloé Nomade Jasmin Naturel Intense EDP, £66 for 30ml
With a bottle that’s shaped to look like one of the fashion brand's best-selling handbags, Drew, this is the summer spin on Nomade celebrating flowering jasmine. And jasmine is definitely what you get. It’s a soft, delicate scent that will feel as at home in a gorgeous Mediterranean landscape as it will in an English summer garden. Even though the jasmine note is strong, it’s not over-powering as it's been beautifully teamed with pear and vanilla that create a light fruity lift as well as a creamy undertone.
7. Best sexy spring perfume: Dolce & Gabbana Q EDP, £68 for 50ml
If you’re looking for a fruity perfume with a bit of a twist, then this may just be for you. Containing notes of Sicilian lemon, blood orange and cherry this hits you with zest and juiciness from first spritz but as soon as it starts to dry down you’re left with slightly more sultry notes of musk and heliotrope, which is slightly nutty and woody. It’s quite a sexy and sultry scent but the fruity notes help elevate it to a lighter place.
8. Best spring perfume for freshness: Issey Miyake L’Eau D’Issey Pivoine EDT Intense, £70 for 50ml
It’s not possible to extract the scent of peony (pivoine in French) so this new scent is an imagining of that scent of when it meets water - as all L’Eau D’Issey scents are. Here the unique blend has been paired with rose, pear and raspberry to create a truly fruity and floral juice. Not only that but Issey Miyake is making strides in upping their eco credentials (something other major fragrance brands could take note of) by using 20 per cent recycled glass for the bottles and sustainably sourced wood for the bottles the caps which are completely recyclable.
9. Best fruity spring perfume: Jimmy Choo Blossom Special Edition EDP, £55 for 60ml
There is no denying that this is a fruity floral scent. It’s loud and proud, with notes of mango, grapefruit, mandarin, raspberry, frangipani and jasmine all in the mix. It’s the perfect scent for hot summer days and anyone who wants their scent to linger for awhile. Also a great option for older teenagers who are looking for a grown-up perfume as this ticks those boxes, plus the designer fashion brand one, but will be very age appropriate.
10. Best sophisticated spring perfume: Carolina Herrera Good Girl Blush EDP, £87.50
With its distinctively designed bottle, which you could genuinely do somebody some harm with, comes this very sophisticated scent for summer. It has moments of the original scent but it is much moved on with the additions of bergamot, rose water and Tonka bean. It’s much softer, more sensual and we think more appealing.
11. Juicy Couture Viva La Juicy Petals Please EDP, £52 for 50ml
If you could bottle the happiness of warmer, brighter and sunnier days then this perfume may just be it. It is unapologetically out there in terms of its bottle design and the juice follows on with ingredients from nearly every note family there is. There is a bit of creaminess from vanilla, floral notes from magnolia and water lily, and a hint of sexiness from amber and caramelised woods. It manages to feel comforting and familiar but also a bit new and exciting all at the same time.
12. Best transformative spring perfume: L’Artisan Parfumeur Soleil De Provence EDP, £155 for 100ml
If you have ever imagined what yellow smells like, then this perfume is it. Bursting with lemon, mimosa and benzoin - a sweet and smooth vanilla-like ingredient - this is just heaven in a beautiful heptagon-designed bottle. It has been designed to smell like the landscape of Provence in the summer and it most definitely transports you to somewhere else where living is easy, the weather is warm and you feel great. All in one spritz.
13. Best barely there spring perfume: Diptyque L’Eau Papier EDT, £90 for 50ml
As you might have guessed from the name, the new Diptyque scent is meant to evoke the smell of ink hitting parchment paper, which Diptyque say is done with the notes of roasted sesame seeds and steamed rice. For us, it transports us to the amazing scent of old books and bookshops but there’s nothing old and musty about it, this is light and feels summery with floral notes of mimosa and white musk. This very much falls into the trend of ‘naked’ perfumes that are subtle and intriguing so not one for those that light to wear an absolute show-stopper but more for those that want people to sniff them that little bit closer.
14. Best warming spring fragrance: Phlur Solar Power EDP, £96 for 50ml
This isn’t the first time Phlur have been in one of our fragrance round-ups, Phlur - the scent that went viral on TikTok - was in our best perfumes Autumn 2022 perfumes edit. This one is perfect for summer and as the name suggests, conjures up the warmth and heath of the sun on your skin. There are notes of sea salt, orange, jasmine and driftwood. Everything you might find on a day or night at the beach.
