I love a good hair oil. Whether to provide my ends with a little extra care in the summer months or to provide a smoothing finishing touch to my blowdry attempts, it's fast become my haircare essential.
A beauty ritual that my mother and grandmother strictly adhered to while growing up, oils are my favourite way to deeply nourish my wavy, thick Asian hair. Have a click through the gallery to see which ones are worth saving or splurging your pennies on.
Supremely hydrating, moisturising, effective and cheap as chips, just pop down to your local supermarket (or your local South Indian or Sri Lankan store for the gingelly oil), for a hair treatment that works a treat but won’t blow the budget.
Beneficial for both thair and scalp, they add bounce and body back to thicker hair types that are feeling dry and brittle (opt for the higher quality ones though). I’d recommend using them as overnight treatments and massaging them into your scalp to reap optimum benefits.
This conditioning pre-shampoo or pre blow-dry ritual is amazing for adding shine and sleekness to dry, frizzy hair types. Non-greasy and lightweight, its versatility lends itself well to being used as a leave-in treatment or as a finishing product to fix flyaways and tame baby hairs.
Enriched with four precious oils to protect, nourish and condition in one fell swoop, it’s a one stop shop well worth visiting on the worst of bad hair days.

Coconut oil has many uses, one of which is as a budget friendly intensive hair conditioning treatment that gives stronger, healthier looking hair for a lower pricetag. Though widely available at supermarkets, I’ve been quite taken by this slightly more expensive alternative from Garnier instead.
Blended with pure coconut oil and designed to reduce frizz and make hair look its best in the humidity, its exotic scent is wonderful for eradicating any post-holiday blues. Perfect for using before and after washing your hair and everything in between, it also makes for the ideal hair oil to pack on holiday for a quick fix post-beach.

One of the most lightweight of all the hair oils featured, this moisturising mist acts as the perfect finishing touch to your hairstyle of choice. It leaves hair soft and not at all weighed down, and is enriched with almond, jojoba and argan oils to pose a triple threat in the rehydration stakes. It’s even travel-friendly enough to pop into your handbag too. Bonus!

This particular hair oil is brilliant for adding shine and softness to all hair types. Go for the original for thicker and afro hair types or the lighter version if you have hair that tends to get greasy fast.
With a strengthening and shine-enhancing combination of antioxidants, proteins and omega-3 oils to protect against heat and environmental aggressors, I use the Original Treatment on wet hair and the Lighter version as maintenance to keep frizziness in between washes to a minimum.
Great for shine, softness, mid-lengths and scalp, this hair oil’s concoction of cuticle smoothing ingredients is guaranteed to make locks look amazing from root to tip. Containing coriander, camelina, apricot, jojoba and coconut oils, although a great addition to your pre-shampoo prep or as an overnight treatment, I particularly like using it after my curling tongs to give a professional finish to my amateur waves.

Known for its restorative qualities, high antioxidant levels and vitamin E content, argan oil has long been used by women to help tame and manage a dry and damaged head of hair.
With its origins in Morocco, there are now many incarnations available on the high street too. My favourite has to be Unite’s U Luxury Oil as it's just incredible at making thicker hair types more supple and more manageable. Non-greasy, only a drop or two is needed for long hair and I found that it kept my mane tangle- and frizz-free for an entire day. Amazing stuff.

My personal favourite hair oil for making the most of my natural texture, this is the one hair product I can’t live without. Enriched with camellia oil to repair, rehydrate and restore what straightening irons or UV damage may have taken away, it leaves hair polished and soft to the touch thanks to its luxurious texture that smoothes and rectifies dry ends instantly. As far as desert island products go, I couldn’t think of one more fitting of the title.
