When Dr Nima Mahmoodi graduated in dentistry from Bristol University in 2013, he could never have imagined that a decade on, he would be running a leading wellness clinic, that some of his best business ideas would come in kundalini yoga classes, or that he’d qualify as reiki master on the side. It’s his unique blend of science and spirituality – aesthetics and esoterics –  that makes us want to know his five daily ‘wellness wins’.

His early success was, by comparison, conventional – he quickly moved into aesthetic medicine and had six thriving Dr Nima aesthetics clinics in and around London. But he surprised everyone by walking away to set up Remedi London, a biohacking clinic with a cosy sanctuary feel in 2022, together with functional medicine expert and nurse Yasmin Shirazi. It came after what he calls “an awakening, a shift”, and a realisation that the more he was learning about the mind and personal development, the less he felt able to treat people purely superficially. “I wanted to heal people in all aspects of their lives,” he says.

When clients came to see him for a shot of Botox or a sprinkling of filler, they’d often confide in him other things that were going on in their lives: “You knew that sorting out the external was going to help them on the inside, to some extent. But, we needed to go a little bit deeper than that.”

At the time, post-pandemic, biohacking was exploding. “People realised that they needed to optimise their health and to ensure that their body and immune system were the best they could be.”

Dr Nima’s take on biohacking isn’t crazy self-experimentation, getting up at dawn for exhaustive routines, or plugging into endless tech. Instead, it’s about nurturing “the five dimensions of wellness,“ he says. “The physical, emotional, social, spiritual and intellectual. To live a fulfilled life, you have to look at all of these.”

It’s no surprise, then, that at Remedi London you can book a hypnotherapy session with your polynucleotides, cryotherapy with your Emerald Laser fat loss treatment or have biological age testing with your Botox, rounded off with sound therapy and an IV drip.

And if that’s not enough, you can join Dr Nima on one of his Remedi Retreats, small group wellness escapes in the Mediterranean, where you can learn from hand-picked top practitioners the key to a happier, more fulfilled, and more energised life.

So what does a doctor, who is a spiritual seeker and also a busy entrepreneur, do daily to stay on the wellness wagon? We joined him on a Remedi Retreat in Italy to discover his wellness wins…

1. Kundalini yoga for emotional and physical healing

Kundalini yoga teacher Jayne Ellis with Dr Nima

“I was looking for yoga to offer at Remedi. I don’t come from a yoga background, so it was all very new. I tried a Kundalini yoga class with Jayne Ellis at House of Wisdom Studio in London and was like, ‘wow, this is the one!’ It made that huge shift within me. It uses a combination of mantras and breathwork movements to stimulate the ‘kundalini energy’ – the energy that’s dormant at the base of our spine.

“It’s kind of like an all-in-one therapy, it works on the glandular system, the lymphatic system, the mental, the physiological, and it’s for exercising as well as it works on your core and helps stretch out certain aspects of the body. It’s not easy because you’re not used to doing those kinds of movements.”

“There is a lot of emotion that comes up, especially the first time people do it. When I see people walk down the stairs of Remedi after a Kundalini session, and try to explain what they just felt, I’m like, ‘You don’t have to. ’ It’s such a fulfilling feeling.”

Try: Kundalini Yoga with Jayne Ellis at Remedi London £21.21 for 90 mins and online at Hightimes Yoga.

2. Red Light Therapy and PEMF for meditation and manifesting

“I spend 15-20 minutes often at the end of the day under the red LED light – in clinic we have a Celler8 bed, which combines red LED light to boost cellular health and PEMF (pulsed electromagnetic field). It sends frequencies throughout the body that help put you in a calmer state, a meditative state.”

“You can get a similar effect walking barefoot on the grass. It’s just funny how technology now is proving ancient wisdom.”

“I don’t use goggles with red LED (but I keep my eyes closed) because there has been research that has shown that it can help improve eyesight.”

“When I do the red light therapy, it’s my time to be mindful. I’ll do 4-4-4-4 breath technique [box breathing] to balance my nervous system and to get me into an alpha (meditative) brainwave state.”

“For home use, I like the Sunlighten LED Red Light Therapy Panel, £1599.99, and you could sit on a PEMF mat to get a similar combination.”

Try: Red Light Therapy with PEMF at Remedi London costs £60 for 30 minutes.

3. Functional mushrooms for stress, immunity and focus

“Functional mushrooms are all natural but there’s a significant amount of science behind taking them (there’s a great documentary on Netflix called Fantastic Fungi).”

“They are good for your gut, and they count towards your 30 plants a week. I take mushroom powders and capsules for immunity, focus, memory, and concentration, particularly Lion’s Mane, which I have in water in the morning. And for stress, the best one is reishi. I have a lot going on, I’m always multitasking and need to keep an eye on my stress levels. When we reduce stress, every single one of our other systems can work better, because we know stress affects sleep, our gut, hormones, everything. Brands I like are Dirtea and London Nootropics (powders) and Hifas Da Terra (capsules).”

4. NAD activator supplements for boundless energy

“I try to get all my patients on Nuchido Time+ capsules to generate energy on a cellular level. It’s not the caffeinated kind of energy, but the motivational kind. I’ve had people send me videos after a week of taking it, where they are dancing in the car! These are women of a perimenopausal or menopausal age, they have the brain fog, fatigue, lack of energy, and they’ve been energised. It can improve hair and skin too, reducing rosacea. Why? Because we’re optimising our cellular function.”

“NAD is this incredible molecule, which we lose by the time we’re 20, and it drives all our cellular processes. We can’t get it from food, we have to make it ourselves in our cells with the help of an enzyme NAMPT, that drops over time. What Nuchido Time+ does is boost the enzyme within the cells to make NAD, so dealing with the root cause, rather than being an NAD supplement.”

“There’s a real boom in the industry with NAD, but a lot of misinformation. Many people are doing NAD drips and NAD injections, and science has proven that these may not be effective techniques to boost NAD, because NAD, as a molecule, is so big it can get into brain cells and the heart cells, but not the rest of the body’s cells. Instead, we need to support the body to make its own NAD inside the cells with an activator supplement like Nuchido.”

5. Cryotherapy and cold showers as a caffeine alternative

“I do cryotherapy three or four times a week in a cryotherapy chamber at minus 87 °C for three minutes.”

“If people don’t know much about cryotherapy, initially, they’re somewhat dubious and apprehensive, but once they get into that chamber and feel the effects – it’s not just physical. We know that you can lose between 500 to 800 calories by activating your brown fat in one session. There’s a 250 per cent increase in dopamine levels, so you feel elated immediately, and afterwards that feeling continues for about seven hours throughout the day, negating the effects of cortisol.”

“It helps with muscle soreness and reduces whole body inflammation too. It’s even great for the skin.”

“When you’re in the cryotherapy chamber, you get vasoconstriction of your blood vessels, and as soon as you come out, you get rebound vasodilation, so greater blood flow to the skin, for hair, etc. It really has all-round benefits.”

“It sets me up for the day. I don’t drink caffeine or take any stimulants. Even if I don’t have access to the cryotherapy chamber, I would have a cold shower in the morning, just to invigorate and revitalise.”

Cryotherapy at Remedi London costs £80 for one person or £120 for two together.

6. And one I want to try… Alpha Stim Aid, £599 cranio-electro stimulation device for calming the brain

“This is an NHS-approved portable device that clips onto your ears to stimulate your brain to produce alpha waves, which you experience in meditation, or just before sleep. It’s a similar approach to a device we have in clinic called the Rebalance Impulse, which puts you in an alpha and theta (dreaming) wave state, which is the optimum state for manifesting.”

“It is something I’m still learning and understanding, and I’m trying to find the science behind signs and synchronicities. I personally believe that the mind is so powerful that it can heal us in many aspects, which is why I try to train my brain as much as possible.”
