With the Lunar New Year upon us, we’re ushering out the Year of the Snake and welcoming the Year of the Yang Fire Horse. It lands over a two-week period from 4 to 17 February – and it’s a big one, that comes around only every 60 years.

What to do to welcome the year of the Yang Fire Horse

The two-week transition period from last year’s Yin Wood Snake to this year’s Yang Fire Horse is a bit like a handover at work. It’s a key time for us all to prep for new  ‘management’, to help us flourish under the new energy regime.

The energy of the horse comes in with the sun on 4 February at what’s known as the ‘start of Spring’, says Katie. “The energy starts small, and it grows. During the two weeks, it expands its path. Then, when the moon energy comes in with the first new moon, the new lunar cycle begins, signifying the beginning of the Lunar New Year as we know it, which this year is 17 February. And at that point, the animal has completed its entrance, because it’s in its sun and moon position.”

The reason why this is important, says Katie, is that it gives us “a little period of grace” where we can work on what we need to let go of from the old year, to make space for new energy to come in.”

This is the time to declutter every aspect of your life, from cupboards to emails – even relationships and habits can be given the heave-ho, so they aren’t swept up into the galloping Yang Fire Horse energy.

In 2025, the energy of the snake was about focus on mindful, sustainable growth, shedding old habits and unwanted baggage, as Katie outlined in her Year of the Snake 2025 Predictions.

But what on earth is a Yang Fire Horse?

Each Lunar astrological year is defined by one of 12 zodiac animals with their own personality: snake, pig, ram, dragon, horse etc (see below to find your birth year animal). It’s also defined by its quality – either yin or yang – and its elemental energy: wood, fire, earth, metal, water.
