When it comes to wearing SPF, its absolutely necessary role in our regimes isn’t just confined to the summer months, with UV damage shown to be prevalent no matter the forecast outside (yes, even when it's cloudy. Yes, even if you're in a car - it penetrates glass). The BBC documentary The Truth About Looking Good revealed the sun is the number one reason we develop wrinkles - a lifetime of shade could see you wrinkle-free until your 80th birthday - and we know that the sun is responsible for skin cancer too, so daily protection is a must. However, the chalky, gloopy textures of many sunscreens in the past meant that the prospect of using one every day could be pretty unappealing. Fortunately, new suncream tech is brimming with sophisticated, hydrating and wearable formulations, as well as greater levels of protection when compared to many moisturiser/SPF combos on the market. An expert-approved way to cap off your skincare ensemble, here’s our pick of the best.
We’re huge fans of La Roche-Posay’s skincare line and this broad spectrum high factor sun cream follows suits if you’re looking for an extra layer of defence against environmental aggressors. Super light, it sinks into skin quickly and leaves makeup unscathed throughout the day. As a bonus, it also has a lovely subtle scent which makes application even more of a treat in the mornings.
Moisturising, nourishing and fast-absorbing, this broad spectrum daily sunscreen leaves dry skin types extremely well hydrated. With none of the usual tell-tale white streaks or powdery residue many other daily SPFs leave in their wake, it leaves complexions glowing. Plus, it smells beautiful too.
This broad spectrum SPF is ideal for daily wear. It has a velvety soft texture which leaves skin feeling pillowy and protected; you can feel it on your skin, but only in the same way you might feel a rich moisturiser - it’s incredibly nourishing. It also has a very sheer tint which means if you don’t need full coverage you can go without foundation, though if you do, it still works well as a radiant primer. There’s only one shade so this will probably only suit fairer skins despite the fact it blends into a very sheer base, which is a shame - especially as it’s also perfect for sensitive types due to its mineral-only sunscreen filters. With benefits for both oily and dry skin types, it’s a crowd-pleaser.
Applied after cleansing, this super silky, clear broad spectrum lotion sinks into skin in a matter of moments (crucial in the morning rush for work) and leaves it feeling both hydrated and smooth. Traceless, it makes a great priming base for foundation and also keeps dreaded shine at bay. People with a dryer complexion may find they also need an additional moisturiser and the fragrance may be offputting for sensitive skin types, but for anyone else, this product is an absolute hero.
Offering full-spectrum protection, this light, weightless sunscreen glides onto skin leaving it feeling smooth and hydrated without any greasiness. As a bonus, the finish is also slightly matte, allowing it to act as the perfect primer for makeup application. Granted, it is very much on the pricier side at £75 however, at 100ml it’s certainly larger than the others in our edit to provide longer-lasting cover for your cash.
While this broad spectrum sun cream is specifically formulated to help meet the needs of those with oily to combination skin, you’d be hard pushed to find a person who wouldn’t appreciate its lightweight, dry-touch texture. Offering all the high performing benefits of a super SPF but with a soft, dry, no-shine and water resistant finish, it also smells dreamy too. (Added note - if you’re looking to wear makeup on top, give this cream roughly 10 minutes to soak into the skin properly first - otherwise it could affect the texture of your foundation).
A great pick for oily skin types in particular, this lightweight broad spectrum SPF leaves the shine-prone hydrated and protected in equal measure. Providing a soft matte finish, it absorbs quickly for a smooth finish plus, the inclusion of plant-based antioxidants in its formula helps provide an effective line of defence against other sources of environmental damage too.
Those with oily skin types will be particularly fond of this dry-touch broad spectrum sunscreen formulated with three powders to give a non-drying mattifying finish. Its silky water-like fluid slips over shiny T-zones seamlessly, leaving skin protected but not weighed down for the ideal daily overcoat for the rest of your skincare.
Extremely lightweight, this multi-tasking broad spectrum daily sunscreen boosts both radiance and skin’s defences plus, it sits very well underneath foundation too. Infused with vitamin C to help counter the effects of environmental wear and tear, it serves as both sun shield and antioxidant power punch in one fell swoop.
This new and improved version of the Skin Defence is a chemical suncreen inside a moisturiser that protects again UVA and UVB rays as well as pollution, providing indoor and outdoor protection. Wondering about all those plus signs? Us too. PA+ is a rating system from Japan indicating how much UVA protection is offered (the more + the better). However, this is not considered as gold standard as 'broad-spectrum SPF', according to Paula's Choice, because it only measures the protection against UVA turning the skin brown (known as PPD, persistent pigment darkening) and not everyone skin reacts the same way.
