“You feel like everyone here is someone that you’re friendly with. It is really important for you to feel comfortable, because people tell us the deepest problems and secrets. I probably know more about my patients than their partners do, ” he says.

Behind the cuddly exterior lies the sharpest of minds. Having aced his A-levels at age 15 (five A stars, no less), he became the youngest medical student at St Andrew’s University at 16, and began working as a doctor aged 21, going on to be a GP (he still keeps his hand in at an NHS practice in London). “That allowed me to kind of really earn my stripes in a way, and really understand not just physically but psychologically, why is a patient there? I still use the NHS concept called ‘ICE ’, which is ideas, concerns, and expectations. It’s a way to understand why your patient sits in front of you, what their idea of beauty is, what their main concern is, and what their expectations are out of that consultation. And once you tackle each one, that patient will be satisfied.”

It’s his patients (“average age 46, but the oldest is nearly 100!”), who keep him on his toes. Forty percent of them fly in from abroad. “They’ll always ask me what’s the newest, what’s the latest, or they’ll bring me an idea. ‘Well, actually, in Brazil they’re doing this’. I attend a lot of medical conferences as well, so it means I’m always out there trying to understand what’s going on. I think this is why my patients really trust me, because for me to offer a treatment or a machine, they know I have researched the life out of it first.”
